SK 8 was founded on May 16, 2006 in Bratislava, by eight self-governing regions of the Slovak Republic. Membership si voluntary, independent on territory of state or political parties.

The Assembly of Association is the highest body of SK 8. The members of the SK 8 association are represented by statutory bodies - presidents of self-governing regions.
